An open standard · version 1.0 · September 2026
MIRROR
Six promises an AI should make you.
An assistant that learns about you should be able to say what it learned, where it lives, what it costs and who it is for — in plain words, to you. MIRROR is that statement, written once so that any product can make it and anyone can hold them to it.
- M
Minimal
We collect the least we can. Nothing is sold, rented or shared — not with advertisers, not with anyone.
- I
Inspectable
You can read everything we know about you, written in plain words. A note you can read is the opposite of a profile kept about you.
- R
Revocable
Correct it or delete it, any time. Where it can, it lives in your own space, not ours.
- R
Reciprocal
You find the value first; we earn your trust before we ask for anything. A month unused is a month unbilled. If we are not right for you, we will not be a burden.
- O
Open
We share how we are doing — the failures with the successes — and your feedback goes straight into the product. What you tell us today can be in your hands tomorrow.
- R
Reaching everyone
Built around community, so that help reaches those who need it and not only those who can pay for it.
Written by Justin Y Alizadeh, September 2026.
Where each promise comes from: Privacy is M · The mirror is I and the first R · Integrity in business is the second R · Transparency is O · Humanity matters is the last R. The five are on our philosophy page.
Steward
MIRROR is written and kept by Affectionate Alien Intelligence Inc., which holds the name only to keep it open. The steward publishes the versions; it does not decide who keeps the promises — the people who use a product do, by reading what it says and holding it to that.
Products that keep it
Adoption is self-declared. We do not certify anyone — yet. A way for the people who use these products to refine the promises and to say who keeps them is the plan; when it exists it will be described here, and every version of this text will stay published.
Adopt it
- Publish the six promises where the people who use your product can see them — in your own words if you like, keeping the meaning of each.
- Say which version you keep, and link here:
affectionatealien.ai/mirror. - Add your product with a pull request, or tell us, and it is listed above.
Keeps MIRROR 1.0
The badge is yours to use on anything that keeps all six. Keep some of them and say which — honestly, in the same place — and you may say so; you may not use the name for it.
Licence
MIRROR by Affectionate Alien Intelligence is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International: copy it, translate it, adapt it, build on it, for anything, with the line "MIRROR, by Affectionate Alien Intelligence — affectionatealien.ai/mirror" somewhere near it.
The name MIRROR is free to use for any product that keeps all six promises. Affectionate Alien Intelligence holds the name only so that it stays open — the same reason Creative Commons and the Free Software Foundation hold theirs — and will never license it exclusively to anyone, itself included.
Propose a change
The text lives in the open at github.com/yasseralizadeh/mirror-standard: propose wording as a pull request, a change of meaning as an issue, and add your product to the adopters there. Or write to us through the contact page. Changes are published as a new version with what changed and why; no version is ever withdrawn. This is version 1.0.
